smoking while pregnant reduces the flow of oxygen and nutrients that reches your baby. this increases your risk of miscarrage and the chance of stillbirths. your doing well by cutting down!!! now just try and quit. good luck

I'm 8 weeks prego and I was a smoker also. I tried quiting a million times before I got pregnant and it was sooo hard. I found out that I was pregnant and decided that I HAD to quit. It's really not as hard as you think it is. Try this, Set a date to stop smoking. Once you have set that date, try to keep to it. From today till the stop date try to smoke one less a day. Like 5 today, 4 tomorrow, 3 the next, and if you need to have an extra day at 4 or 5 then go for it, but just really try. I found that if I had that urge to smoke a cigerette I'd eat one of those cinniman hard candies. The cinniman is supposed to have a nasty taste when you think cigerette. Also let everyone know that you are quiting, and have someone to support you while quiting. My husband keeps telling me how proud of me he is that I've quit.(even though it's been a month and a half since I've stopped). By the time your stop date comes up them you'll be ready to quit! just keep in that mind set that "I'm quiting smoking!" I'm sure you can do it for the health of your baby and you! Good luck!

No cig is safe whether you're preg or not. I used to smoke up until I found out I was preg but went cold turkey. I had a placental abruption with my 2nd son at 23 wks (no known cause), but my midwife told me it's common with women who smoke during pregnancy. Trust me you don't want to go through it as I had to bury my child a wk later. I'm not trying to scare you but in a way I am. It's not worth your child to continue smoking. I know it's hard to stop, but the first week is the hardest. If you cut down from a pack to 7 a day you can cut from 7 to none rather easily. Yes you will have cravings and yes you'll be groucher than ever, but in the end you'll have your baby in your arms and not just a picture hanging on your wall.

Well, I'm sure you know that smoking is definitely not good for your baby, and that quitting altogether is the best thing you can do for your baby.
However, since I used to be a smoker, I know how difficult that can be, especially now that you're pregnant and you're going through so many physical and emotional changes.
I definitely think that you should be proud of yourself for cutting back. Since you were able to cute it down to 7 cigarettes a day, I think you should just try cutting down a little at a time. In a few weeks, try limiting yourself to 5 cigarettes a day for a few weeks, then when you feel comfortable with that, try cutting down to 3 cigarettes a day. Even if you never quit completely, cutting back as much as possible can really be beneficial to the baby.
If it makes you feel any better, I have known quite a few women who smoked during their pregnancies, and delivered healthy babies. One of them actually delivered a 10 pound baby, and she didn't even cut back on smoking at all. I'm not trying to say smoking is ok while you're pregnant, I'm just letting you know that you can very well have a perfectly healthy baby.
I wish you the best of luck with your pregnancy!

hmmm a lot of support in the answers there ( not ) , its not really ok to smoke whilst pregnant but at least you have cut back , its better than nothing . i smoked all through my pregnancy too ( with twins ) i cut back to around 3 a day from a packet , people dont seem to realise how hard it is to quit , sure some people can just stop and that be that but others my self included find it hard , and my doctor told me in an ideal world i should stop but cutting them out all together could be stressfull for myself and the babies. ok it can harm the baby but my twins were born full term for twins and were both healthy , not that im suggesting smoking wont harm them but if you have cut back to 7 a day try goin for 5 tomorrow and then 3 and so on .
good luck and congrats.

it's not okay in the sense that there are still risks to your baby and smoking during pregnancy is not safe. But it sounds like you've cut back alot and that is a good thing, the more you can cut back the better it is for your baby, and even if it takes you the whole 9 months to quit it's still good to stop, don't think "well I've been smoking the whole time so why stop now" everyday that you are not smoking is better for your baby. Make it your goal to quit entirely.

I know how you feel....I too smoked about a pack a day, maybe a little more, but once I found out I was pregnant, I cut down to 3-5 a day. I know some people say that even that isn't enough....but still at least you have cut down! I know several women who have smoked and have had beautiful healthy babies! It's very hard to quit smoking, and I have tried several times, but the stress that comes with it is harmful to baby as well. The choice is yours whether to fully quit or not! :)
I am happy to hear you cut down! That's tough! Believe me, I have been there!!! :)
Good Luck and Congrats! :)

It is a lot better than a pack a day. Many docs say that quitting all together is worse during pregnancy because it puts extra stress on your body. Talk to your doc and see if there is a way to cut it down more than that. But the less you smoke the better.

i am a smoker as well. my doctor and I had a discussion of this the other day. it is ok to smoke during pregnancy. but only when you are really stressed or just really need one that you cant stand it anymore. a couple a week will not hurt you. but smoking packs and packs will he said. so please take this adivse. smoke one - three a day is ok. try to cut down to a pack a week. by keeping cutting down it will help a great deal. i still myself smoke a occassionaly
