and they concluded that it could be because of irregular periods and want me to take birth control. My husband has had a vasectomy, so it is not necaessary for anything else. My question is, why would irregular periods be painful- and how will regulating my cycle fix this?? (Again, I have seen the Dr, I just am confused and curious about ideas so that the next time I talk to her, I have some pespective.... thanks!)

Just taking a STAB....

Did they mention anything to you about PCOS? Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome. Some PCOSers suffer from painful ovaries or painful ovulation. One of the symptoms in getting diagnosed is irregular periods. PCOS in the most basic terms is a hormone imbalance and the pill can help regulate your hormones.

If it ends up being PCOS...you have choices...meaning weigh your options...taking synthetic hormones (pill) the rest of your life can have massive risks...you can look in to bio-identical hormones. I am doing that. No side effects...they are great. (www.hotzehwc.com) is my doctor.

GOOD LUCK!! :) I hope you get it figured out!

I hope you got yourself a thorough Dr. there are a lot of causes of recurring pain in the ovary. I hope you underwent a lot of studies and laboratory exams to rule out other causes. If you did, then its only then that a doctor could safely say its just because of your irregular menses. This is why you are asked to take the pills. Pills are hormones that will correct any abnormalities of your hormone in the hope of normalizing it and getting you off the pain. Pills have many uses. Its not just for controlling birth.
If it is still recurring even after you have taken the pills consult him again it might be more serious than just that.
My niece had similar problems, given same meds with no relief, only to find out later that she has endometriosis. Ask your Gyne what this mean.

The pain is in the mid cycle. The egg enlarges and becomes painful. Sometimes it forms a cyst.

I had this problem years ago and the BC pills did not help much. The doctor did a laproscopic exam to evaluate my pain. He said it would go away after having kids. It didn't, and the pain became so bad I had the ovary removed.

Advil helps the pain somewhat.

Well, you have two ovaries, and every other month, it is that ovaries turn...that's is why they are irregular...I had the same problem..one month my period would be OK..the next I would have terrible cramps, alot of blood, even at times a fever....By taking the birth control pills, it will even things out so it is the same period every month...the pills even help with the blood flow, and the periods aren't so painfull...I hope I have helped you....If you have any other questions feel free to email me.

How long does the pain last? Is it around the same time you should be ovulating?

If the pain doesn't last too long and is around the time you are ovulating it could be some weird name I can't remember, but all it really is is pain during ovulation.

My guess on the birth control would be to regulate your periods in case you have endometrosis (sp?).
