If you used turpentine on the carpet, then the carpet is ruined, most likely. Many of today's carpets are made of recyclable plastics, or other man made synthetics... and the turpentine would chemically alter the fibers.

I usually advocate repair rather than replace, but if this is what happened, I'm afraid you are going to have to replace the carpet to get rid of the problem. Count it as a learning lesson, heheh, and next time put down some plastic before painting.

Good Luck

Chuck a tin of paint down the stairs. Tell your boyfriend you tripped and hurt yourself, he will be more worried about you not the stairs. Call your insurance company, and tell them you've had an accident, get the money, a new carpet, a happy life and a slightly larger premium on your next years insurance. Job done.

Eek! Could you try claiming on your home insurance? Or replace it with a patch of carpet taken from under a piece of furniture? (never done it myself, so can't guarantee it will work) Hope you get it sorted.

Carpet shampoo the whole carpet to bring up the pile, this may mask it!
