Why do cars today with the exception of a few not get as good or more mpg than cars from the 80's? I have a 81 datsun and friends with other small carburated 4 cyl. trucks and the newer small trucks do not sem to get any better gas mileage that one from 25 years ago. Also some of the smaller cars like toyotas and vw to meantion a couple do not get any better gas mileage than some of the celicas, jettas and rabits that are 20 plus years old. Why is this?

As the years have gone by the horse power and output of the cars has increase as well, some say by more than double. Car and Driver Magazine did a brief article in one of their issues on this very same issue. Check out the link below for a pretty good explanation.
