Because they can't make babies.
Also because there is no religion to marry the couple, remember marriage is an institution of the church that is only subsidised and recognized by the government. If there were a traditional religion that married homosexuals then the government would be more inclined to recognize the idea.
So if you would like to see it happen then take advise from L. Ron hubbard and start your own religion.

It's because all the bible thumpers are scared. Gay is part of the human condition. People are born that way, it isn't a fetish. Why would anyone choose to live this lifestyle unless they were truly gay? It's not a choice. Every scientific study has resulted in the same answer: Being gay is part of the human condition.
As to the moron above that says if it's legal everyone is going to run out and get married - that's ridiculous. Straight people could do the same thing and I don't see you talking about that. Either way, it's their right.
HOW DOES GAY MARRIAGE AFFECT ANYONE BUT GAY PEOPLE???
It doesn't. It has no affect on our lives. If marriage betters society than why not allow gay people to participate in it?
I believe that ALL gay marriage opponents just don't like gay people so they argue about marriage and religion which has NOTHING to do with the legalization of gay marriage. Your arguments ring similar to the black civil rights movement last century. How come you people are so scared of gays getting married yet we don't hear you crying when the divorce rate is at 66%. I didn't hear you crying when people were getting married on game shows.
Most of you don't really know what you're talking about. To actually say that being gay is immoral?!?!?! Who are you to decide what is and isn't moral? Your beliefs are based on the bible which has no creditability in reality.

Because marriage is legally defined as an institution between a man and a woman - husband and wife. In order for Gay marriage to be legal - the laws would have to change and Americans are not interested in Mrs. and Mrs. nor Mr. and Mr. Smith.

First I want to say this.I am not homophobic.I have many friends and family members who are gay. However, MARRIAGE is a union which is held sacred in all churches and many peoples minds. Therefore I would never advocate a marriage right. However again,if they would settle for a civil union that I could live with.Civil unions shouldn't just be for gays though. There are many unmarried adults living together who would also benefit from a civil union.

Because we live in New Puritania and the theocrats have subverted the Constitution in order to force their twisted agenda on the rest of us.
Edit: Personally, I think they should revoke the citizenship of everyone who believes that we live in a theocracy and make them take the test that people normally have to take to be nationalized. Make them earn their citizenship back, because clearly they've no idea what country they actually belong to and have sworn allegiance to somewhere other than the United States of America.
People! This is not a theocracy! We weren't "founded on Christianity" or any other such nonsense! "But all the laws are based on the 10 commandments!" Looking aside from the fact that there's a 9/10 chance that theocrats don't know all of the commandments anyway, and even then you'd be listing the *second* 10 commandments, (yeah, I know more about Christianity than the average Christian) our laws are not based on the 10 commandments! Or there'd be a law against worshipping other Gods.
Thankfully, we are not a theocracy, we're not a country that bases its laws on Christian doctrine, and as such arguing that it's because Christianity says no is about as realistic as saying that it's because faeries water the grass at night while we sleep!
It's because people are inherently bigoted and abuse their religion to further their prejudice.
As a 100% straight, white, male, Christian citizen of the United States of America... I look around and my fellow countrymen and women disgust me with how little they know and how infrequently and carelessly they walk the path they claim to.

Marriage is more than a contract between two people, it is a contract with the society. The foundation of a civil society is a stable nuclear family made of a man and woman and their biological children living in one household. The traditional family unit supports itself and adds healthy participants to society. Anything else is a drain on society and costs us more than money. Many families cannot have the traditional two parent household because of factors beyond their control. Gay marriage is is a willing subversion of that standard and for that reason should not be sanctioned by law. If homosexuals want to live together, there is no law to stop them, they should not expect society to change to suit them, however. A change in laws to accept gay marriage is a fundamental change in societal norms. We as Americans have decided that we do not want that change.

It's not legal because of the homophobic 'Christian' hypocrites.
Kinda like many of the ones who posted here who offer no valid reason why same sex marriage should be denied. Maybe if the gays and lesbians stopped paying ALL of our taxes........

Because the majority of Americans don't agree with the concept of a marriage being anything but a formal, legalized relationship between a man and a woman.

Because every person in America that is living with someone of the same sex would get married. That way they would save money on insurance and taxes.
On another note I feel civil unions of same sex couples should be legal.
Marriage, is a religion thing, and is up to the religious leaders wether to allow same sex couple.

Because its wrong. Any other questions? How and when did a sexual perversion go mainstream to the point its out in the open and accepted? Have all the gay sex you want, be friends, live together. I don't care. But its just a fetish, not a recognizable relationship. Sorry. The purpose of marriage is to better and advance society. Period.
