Hi all. I am trying to think of ways to be more environmentally friendly and I would like some information on composting. I do not have a yard but I do grow flowers on my deck and I was wondering how I would go about composting on my deck.

Composting is a way of life in Japan even tho most people live in tiny apartments. The key is to have the right tools. You can chop up all your waste and mix with a handful of soil then put the mixture into a flower pot, fill with more soil and a plant. If you have a lot of waste then you may want to check out the Naturemill. This composting machine is present in nearly every Japanese home and has now become available in the US. This is the easiest system to use....food scraps in the top....compost comes out the bottom. Mix the compost 50/50 with soil, vermiculite or even sand and you have instant and perfect potting mix.

You don't want to compost right outside your door because it does sometimes draw flies, and then big spiders like to build a web to catch the flies. I have the spinning barrels and occasionally they will go anaerobic and then you need to add dry materials but it can take a day or two to right itself. I would not want it right outside the door.

Why not start the whole complex composting! Call your county co-operative extension and ask them to send a master gardener volunteer to make a presentation to the condo board. The master gardeners have to do a certain number of volunteer hours to get their certification, and a project like this is exactly what they want to do. They will suggest the right kind of containers, and show you how to start, and visit you during the process when you have questions. Then each participant could have a share of the compost, or it could go on a community flowerbed.

You might look into getting one of those composter-tumbler barrels advertised on television.
