He's mostly an auto didact. Usually that refers to someone who lacks traditional education for whatever reason but managed through hard work and his/her own research to get educated anyway. In Rush case he just lacks traditional education and pulls things out of his , well you know.

Wikipedia used to say he went to college for one semester, now it says two, so who knows. Lack of education has actually helped his career. He can make all kinds of "logical" connections that an educated person would not.
