Is it true that the Government pays U.S. citizens to live in Alaska?

i was told that if someone planned to live in Alaska, each month or year, the government will send you a check just for living there, because the population in Alaska needs to increase. It sounded too good to be true.

People in Alaska do get money for living there. I think you have to live there two years to qualify, but it is true--my daughter lives there so I know.

Ok, so while a lot of these answers are right, none of them are really complete. Yes, we get paid to live in Alaska, and yeah, you have to be a resident for two years and in good tax standing. No, it isn't the government that pays us, it is the state of alaska. The Permanent Fund Dividend was a policy enacted back when Ernest Gruening was governor and alaska first invested in oil. The idea was essentially that no matter what, alaskan resources should benefit the alaska people, not big coorporations or the federal government, which has quite a bit of control over Alaskan oil (Think ANWR). So, each year 20% of oil revenue is divded into the population of Alaska as compensation for the lost resources. Part public relations, part environmentalist, and part blue-collar policy all nicely wrapped in one check totalling somehwere around $1000 a person.

There is only a little bit of truth to that. First of all, it's Alaska's state government that pays its residents, not the US government. They pay its residents once per year. And the reason they pay you is because it's sort of like dividends from all the money Alaska gets from having so much oil. (It's not because they need more people that they pay you. The amout they pay you only equals a couple hundred dollars a person or so it's not really an incentive to move there). Also - the cost of living in Alaska is more expensive than many other places so what you get from the government isn't really worth it.

It's called the Alaska Permanent Fund dividend and the payout is every October. The amount varies every year because it's based on the fund's earnings. For 2006 the payout was about $1100 for every man, woman and child. That means a family of six would get $6600.00. The highest dividend was about $1800.

To qualify you have to be an Alaskan resident for an entire calendar year. So if you moved into the state on 1/2/2007 you can't file for a dividend until 2009 but if you established residency 3 days earlier you could file for 2008.

NO .Its the state that pays us a dividend on oil and gas revenues. The amount we get changes acording to a 5 year average of how much money our oil has brought in.You get a dividend check for every member of your household who is a resident of the state.So if you are married and have 4 kids and the dividend is $1000.00 this year you would get $6000.00
