What were the social and economic consequences or effects of the nuclear arms race between the Soviets and the USA? (The actual RACE, not nuclear war, thanks)

It has calmed conflict between the main important of countries and maximum in all probability stalled yet another international conflict, via assumption of on an analogous time assured Destruction (if a considerable conflict erupts, everybody dies and everybody loses). yet this does not outweigh the expenditures...nuclear hands stockpiles have been increasing at alarming fees and function stored our international on the threshold of destruction! you won't be able to hug your toddlers with nuclear hands.
