I have 2 sets of data for NaCl in soils and one is in mg/kg and the other is in ppm, but don't I need to know how much a cm3 of my soil weighs to be able to convert it?

ppm stands for parts per million. mg/kg is equivalent to ppm because there are 1 million milligrams in 1 kilogram. Therfore if you had something that had 2.8 ppm NaCl in soil, you could say that the concentration of NaCl in the soil is 2.8 mg/kg. The two sets of units are virtually interchangable and you do not need any additional information to convert them.

I suspect your question may not be entirely complete though.
In the case that the ppm data is from an extracted or concentrated sample then the amount of sample needs to be taken into account for the conversion. For instance if you take 10g of soil and extract it with water to isolate the NaCl salts and then concentrate the extract down to 1mL (or some other volume) and then measure the ppm concentration within that extract, then yes, you need to do some more math to convert ppm into mg/kg because the ppm you are measuring from a liquid extract is now in mL rather than in kg. You may not even need to know this answer though so I'll stop there, but if the problem is more complicated repost the question to get a more complete answer. I just don't want to mislead you into thinking the conversion is always easy in all cicumstances.

1 gm = 1x10^03 mg = 1x10^6 ppm. 0.05 mg = 5x10^-2mg x 10^6 5x10^-2 .= 5.0x10^4 ppm = 50,000 ppm 0.5 mg =5x10^-1 mg x 10^6 = 5x10^3 ppm= 5,000 ppm

mg/kg is already in ppm

10^-3/10^3 = 10^-6 which is parts-per-million

To find the weight of the salt in the soil, you do need the weight of the soil and the concentration of salt (in either ppm or mg/kg)
