Trolls hide under briges so they can pop up and scare the living daylights out of people on the bridge!!

Unconfirmed theory: "They are afraid of sunlight and like water. Perhaps it is particularly easy to attack from under a bridge. I think that is where government got the notion to charge bridge tolls.."
But, I think that most trolls would be found in forests, with a gift of invisibility and the ability to move about freely. They delight in doing mischief.

cos ever since they were born, ppl were telling them they were ugly....their mothers abused them, they were teased at school, and girls ran away crying when they tried to date. Now, even though these poor trolls are really intelligent gentle and caring ppl, they have been treated with contempt their entire lives. eventually,they attempt suicide by leaping off a bridge. Of course, due to their immense bad luck, they don't die, but manage to break both their legs, leaving them trapped and alone under the bridge. in order to survive, they need to snack on the occassional goat, even though it leaves them sick with guilt and remorse....they slowly become dead inside....and that is why they live under the bridge.

1) They are ugly and scorned by common folk.
2) Hiding under bridges allows them to jump out at unsuspecting people and force them to pay toll for using the bridge.
Or at least, that's how it goes in most fairytales. ;)
