I believe it was Henry II, the man who was also ultimately responsible for Becket's death through several of his loyal knights, who had taken Henry too literally when he said: "Who will rid me of this meddlesome priest?" Henry never dreamed that Thomas Becket would develop a greater loyalty to the church and to the poor than to himself, but he did, and it finally led to Becket's undoing.
