My son started with electric guitar last year and we purchased a reasonably-priced guitar from Guitar Center. It came with extras, like a tuner and an amp. This was around $250. There are definitely cheaper sets or just the guitar would also be fine, and you can get one from around $100 new.

I would also suggest going to craigslist or ebay and checking out guitars.

do judge it by price, judge by feel for you and quality. You should feel comfortable with it being that you wil have to earn on it. Make sure the action of the strings is low so you can fret them. If you dont know what i mean ask the clerks at the store. You can get a good fender strat squier series for about 100 dollars those are good guitar over all. Not just beginners. But I rcommeded you buy an ALL TUB amp, your sound wil be amazing with any guitar.

Don't spend any more than you have to. Do make sure you have 3 things on it. 10-gage strings, an 'A' tuning fork, and make sure the keys are in good shape.
The fork will help you tune the guitar and teach your ear what to listen to. The strings will help develop you fretting hand strength, and don't by a piece of junk.
When you get to a point where you are comfortable playing, that's when you go looking for a guitar that fits your playing style.

Most music stores have packages for beginers.....they come with a guitar, an amp, a strap, some picks, a tuner(everything you need to get started) and they are usually like Fender of Jonson (both are pretty good brands) and they are usually around $120-$150.

You should be able to find one, with amp included for around 120 bucks- Even walmart sells beginner packages. When you have learned to play and are ready to get something with more quality, then you are justified to spend the extra bucks. For learning though a cheap-o is just fine.

I bought mine for around £149 ($270) with a practice amp, bag and tuner.

Being as its your first, hold out the real money until you can play. Even a guitar cheaper than the above will be ideal for you as you will only be learning your finger placements and chords.

As much as you can possibly afford.

Oh, and in response to the above answer by Concerned Consumer, if you cannot find an "ALL TUB" amp (and I suspect you won't), try an all tube amp.
