what are the five superstring theories, and why do they need to be united by the M-theory??? (in laymans terms if possible!)

Once upon a time I saw a wonderful program, I think it was on the Discovery Channel or perhaps it was a Horizon broadcast, which explained all about the String Theory, the SuperString Theories and alike, i'm going to see if I can track something down for it.

In the mean time, have a watch of these series of films called String's The Thing on YouTube. Theres 5 in total:

The five theories all turned out to be the same when they added unifying terms, it pretty much turned to M theory.
