The problem is, the Recorder only recognizes channel 3 (the channel my Dish Network reciever connects to); all channel changes take place within the Dish network receiver. Therefore, I can only record the channel I am on. Is there a way that the recorder would recognize the satellite channels enabling me to watch one show and record another?

I feel your pain. I too experienced the same thing and here is the answer. You need to cable feeds from the outside of the house. On the back of your DVR you find ant 1 and 2. Both lines should feed in this way you can continue to watch one and recorder another.
