I have a dull ache in my lower right abdomen (flank). It occured a few weeks ago, lasting for a few days, and has since returned. I only noticed it this morning, and has continued for about 6 hours so far. Any ideas as to what this is? The pain is certainly bearable, not excrutiating at all; that said, it's uncomfortable, and mildly scary. Is this something I should be concerned about?

Bear B: I do appreciate your help, but I don't think it is appendicitis; I haven't had any of the accompanying symptoms (nausea, loss of appetite, vomiting, shaking, etc.) and the pain is more a small cramp-like, colicky pain. It's also on in the middle of the lower abdominal quadrant, and feels like it's about two inches in (I'm thinking perhaps the ascending bowel?). Do you think it might be something as simple as constipation, or something else equally harmless? I'm in the middle of switching insurance providers, so I'm disinclined to head to the Doctor unless absolutely necessary; that said, if the pain gets worse I'll certainly make haste to the nearest stethescope-wearing man/woman.

Any other theories?

It could be something else, but it does sound like the classic symprom pattern for appendicitis. Appendicitis is a difficult diagnosis sometimes even for a doctor. Since it occurred before, went away and came back I would say you really need to see a doctor. The doc will likely feel around a bit, then order a blood test and make a judgement call. If it's nothing serious, you will know, and if it is appendicitis you can get treated before it gets really serious. Get thee to a medicine man! Now!
