I think that you need to restate the question as "who are the greatest three professional football players of all time?" As it's originally written, any Nobel prize winner who's picked up a professional football (whether it be to play or just hold) is an acceptable answer.

So, if you're question is "who are the greatest three professional football players of all time?" then my answer would be:

Red Grange, RB, Chicago Bears -- Before Grange entered the NFL, football was a college sport, not a professional sport. Grange, known as the Galloping Ghost, changed that almost overnight. He was a one-man sensation who was so dominant in college, George Halas paid him the exorbitant sum of $100,000 to play for the Bears right out of college. In 1925.

Otto Graham, QB, Cleveland Browns -- he played for the Browns for 10 years, led them to the Championship game every year, and won 7 times.

Jerry Rice, WR, San Francisco 49ers, Oakland Raiders, and Seattle Seahawks -- possibly the hardest working player the game has ever seen. Owns the records for most receptions in a career, the most receiving yardage in a career, the most yards from scrimmage in a career, the most TDs in a career, the most receiving TDs in a season, and the most receiving yards in a season.

Somehow, the Eastern Press has established Jim Brown as one of the all time greats. He had great running ability but he never blocked for anyone else, he was not a team player his entire career and he maintained a very racist attitude as he later admitted in his book. But people that never seen him play always vote for him because it's the thing to do. The top 3 in my humble opinion and I have watched the game since 1941 are as follows: ....Walter Payton, Jerry Rice and Joe Montana

Jerry Rice-Amazingly better than #2 WR
Barry Sanders-15,000 yards in 10 years. 1500 for 15 years, 22500
Jim Brown-Over 12,000 in 9 years. Over 1350 yards a year. Make that 15 years like Emmitt Smith and you have about 20250 yards.
