I have yet to get anything but the form letters they have prepared on several issues,I have stacks of them literally. I have lately taken to just flat out insulting Charlie Gonzales of Texas because of his immigration stances, which seem to indicate that he thinks American citizens are second in importance where immigration is concerned,so maybe I will get a real response soon

At lot less than I would have hoped for. I email them almost weekly, either to badger them on something they said or promised or to give them my opinion on upcoming votes, after all the jerks are supposed to represent me.

I get an automated reply to all and I get a reply written by a staffer to about 15% of the emails and I actually have two I believe were written by one Senator, a man of honor, who has always done what he said he will do. I am going to miss having him in Congress when he quits after this term, he is most likely the last honest person there.

Which one?

US Senator Sam Nunn: 4 times, with a persoanl visit, at one point.

US Representative Nathan Deal: 5 times, with one personal visit.

US Senator Zell Miller: 12 times.

US Senator Max Cleland: 2 times.

US Representative John Linder: 5 times.

The ink was still wet on over half of all of these letters.

I have before but it's much less common these days due to volume of correspondence. The correspondence is separated by issues and pros & cons and tallied by Staffers. The official is given the tallies, some samples and some noteworthy, along with any prominate citizens correspondence to read and perhaps respond. The rest of the correspondence gets automated replies.

Do you realize that most officials don't even write their own speeches either?

In the USA, State Governors sign bills making them in to state law. Below is a link on the overview of that legislative process. The second website will allow you to find your state and local politicians.

I wished more people on Y!A would spend time doing this instead of just blowing hot air here. It would be a lot more proactive and democratic.

My vote is just One, but it matters. Welcome to the process!

I've written many letters over the years to many elected officials on all levels, and with exception of politicians on the local level,I have never gotten any other reply from a politician that wasn't a form letter, many of which had absolutely nothing at all to do with what I wrote about .

I had a represenative see me in the paper and send me a pamphlet thanking me for being involved in the community. it wasn't personalized, but it was nice that he or someone in his office found my picture and sent something to me unprompted
