You need a loupe. This site has a relatively extensive tutorial for viewing your diamond. http://www.original-diamonds.com/jewelry_loupe.php

Here is one way, but I think they might be to small to use this way. When it is completely clean can you see and inclusions? I have also heard of a way where the reflection of as real diamond on white paper will be blue or something. I'd have to look it up though. I know certain color ones (still white diamonds but variable color) will glow a bit in black light. Oh, I just found it on here.......http://madsci.org/posts/archives/aug98/903462675.Es.r.html.

Or, go to a jeweler. If you walk in and ask them, usually they can put it under a magnifying glass or scope and tell you in a second.

The only positve test for diamond (that is practical) is to use a thermal conductivity meter. Take it to a pawn shop or a jeweler and ask them to test it. They may charge a small fee.

If you can touch and see it, then it is real. If not then it is imaginary. I think what you meant to ask was "how do you tell if it is authentic?'.
