I have my Betta in a 2.5 gallon planted tank. I apparently had some snail eggs hitch a ride on some new plants that I bought. I've only seen one and have scoured the tank looking for more but I only see the one. If I allow him to grow in there and it is only the one snail, will he harm my plants or fish badly? I am not above replacing the plants if he eats too much of them. Right now all I have in there is a small bunch of Combomba (sp?) and 3 aponogeton bulbs. I know how to get rid of the snails if it came down to it but I just need to know if I keep at least one for aesthetic value would it be harmful?

I usually put half a tablespoon of aquarium salt in his tank, will this harm the snail?

Nope shouldn't be a problem at all. Snails are just about as harmless as they come. He will munch on the plants a very little bit, but nothing you will notice. Be sure to watch for more though, usually where there's one there are many hiding away.

Freshwater snails are harmless to the fish in the tank. The small amount of aquarium salt used for freshwater will not harm the snails.

I love keeping them around to eat up algae, but they can and will breed themselves out of space. For me this is fine since I plan on setting up a tank for some dwarf puffers.

It won't hurt anything, as long as you don't mind replacing the plants from time to time.
