The Crane-fly (Daddy Long Legs) larvae is called the leather- jacket or leather-back.
The Crane-Fly lays its eggs in your grass and they turn into the larvae.
These grubs will do untold damage to your lawn.
Ask the Head Green-keeper at you local Golf Course ,but beware of very rude words!

The leatherjacket is the larva of the crane fly (mosquito hawk) and lives in the soil. It feeds on the roots. Some species get numerous enough to cause lawn damage, killing some of the grass. Adult crane flies are harmless, feeding on nectar or not eating at all.
