Why did 343 firemen who know fire not get out of the WTC's?

The fireman were trying to get the people who were still trapped in the towers out. That is their job. They may know fire but they do not know steel. They had no way of knowing that the fire would warp the steel supporting the towers causing them to come crashing down.
