I have 4 fish tanks and constantly hear about lowering nitrates. I have the opposite problem in that my nitrates remain always very low...possibly to not even the reading of 5. I try to tell people I have low nitrates but for some reason, can't seem to get a believer. Is there an explanation for this low level in my tank and what can I do to increase nitrates in my planted tank?

Thank You

You have low nitrates because 1) you have a planted tank and the plants are using what is produced, 2) you do not have an overloaded tank so far as fish population to tank size goes 3) Koodos to you for sucha healthy tank. I would keep what you are doing and use other methods to increase plant growth such as iron treatments and CO2 injection. If it is a large planted tank with very few nitrogen producing organisams I would suggest a few more fish or trying to up your feeding of your current fish, SLOWLY though. Good luck and again great job at keeping your tank in good condition.

The plants are the answer to your question. They feed off of the nitrates and keep the level low. There are various aquarium fertilizers available that contain nitrates, but use them with caution and well below the recommended dose. If you get very much nitrate in the tank you can expect a major algae bloom.

Your nitrates stay low because you have a planted tank. Those who don't believe you don't realize live plants use the nitrates. So don't worry about it - low nitrates are simply not a problem.

planted tanks will always have lower nitrates with really low levals it indicates over planted tanks still not a problem its perfectly fine if you want to raise nitrate levals fish can be added

also you should have a few bubblers with a lot of plants
