Thank you. It would be wonderful to actually see well thought out arguments in support of or against certain political positions but what I see mostly around here amounts to nothing more than a playground taunting contest.

I just make it a point to not answer either parties slam questions, its childish and gets no where. Most people just do it for points because they can't actually answer the question so they answer with slander to get points and make themselves feel intelligent. I would love to see something like this that didn't get out of hand, I am with you 100%. However on this particular forum, I doubt if you will ever see a time that people debate rather than name call.

Let's call thigs what they really are. we are not talking about conservativr and liberal viewpoints. We are referring to Republicans and Democrats.
Republicans seem to think that conservative means Republican and what ever the Republican party claims to stand for. The Republican party has always stressed the importance of a strong centralised government that rules by law. Democracy is okay as long as Republicans are the only ones allowed to vote. Conservatative really means to resist change. The the Republican, the Republican way is the only way. The neo-conservatie movement within the Republican party is the really scary thing. Oddly enough, the roots of the neoconservative movement and the Islamist terrorists both originated with similar beliefs preached by Sayed Kotb and Leo Strauss.
In general, the underlying theme is that people are to selfish and greedy to be trusted with their own governance, That rule by democracy is a failed experiment, and to save society from itself, the masses must be ruled by a ruling class which cannot be held accountable to the people.
Democrats, usually put too much faith in the honesty and intelligence of the individual. Unfortunately, A lot of people vote for a candidate regardless of party ties, because he looks good on tv/was someone famous/was related to someone famous/or they believe the candidate is going to win and they think of the elections more as a horse race.
I have observed that Republicans tend to fall into two categories:
Those that want absolute control, and those that want a total lack of accountability.
Democrats tend to fall into the categories of charitable egotists ( you know, the kind that writes out a large check to put in to the collection plate at church so every one will know how much he tithed) , and the ones that expect someone else to fix their problems for them.
The minority that doesn't fit into the above 4 categories are usually independent.
I do hear more name-calling coming from Republicans. They seem to think that liberal is a curse-word, and usually couple it with derogatory adjectives such as childish, ignorant, stupid.
Republican leader do not like having their beliefs examined , or questions. Republican followers do what the Republican leaders tell them to do, believe what they are told to believe.
Democratic leaders like to talk big and look authortative about things they don't understand, and the Democratic followers expect the leaders to give them something.
It is a disfunctional system. There needs to be some change. I think I'll write in Jim Varney next election (Yeah... I know he's dead).

Because we all feel very strongly about the topics discussed on these forums. We are all sure that we are right and to believe otherwise is wrong. Anyone who doesn't believe as we do must be either unintelligent or simply ignorant. After all, if you knew all the facts as I do (naturally assuming that we know everything there is to know about the topic at hand) then you would believe as I believe.
Most of the name calling is due to people with poor self-esteem. They see anything that questions their beliefs as a personal attack. And since they see themselves as being under attack, they respond in a confrontational manner.

I am fairly new to this forum and I have noted the lack of reasoned response from some participants. I guess that the people who resort to these base attacks are really not schooled is the art of polite discourse. The comeback of "You Moron" , is easier than saying" I Disagree", Or they left their brain in their other pants. See how easy the put down's are?

It is so hard after trying time and again to enlighten people. It is like banging your head on a brick wall. Resorting to name calling is human nature when faced with great frustration.

True, and I have been guilty of mudslinging, but it's so frustrating to see such ignorance.
