Stupid question, I know. But it's been decades since I've bought a new car, and I just bought one. My former car was a used car and I think I waxed it all of 2 times in the 8 years I owned it. The paint still looks good.

Is waxing really necessary these days, other than to bring out the shine? Also, to bring out the beauty and shine of a car's paint, what would be your recommended product, that hopefully involves minimal work?

A few of you have said I should wax to protect the clear coat. Isn't the clear coat the protection for the paint? In essence you are saying I should put protection on the protection?

Yes you should wax it. Todays paints use clear coats and clear coat is still paint. You want to protect it from acid rain, animal droppings and road tar! There many products on the market today that you just spray on and rinse off. A good past wax once a year is a good idea. Mothers brand waxes and polishes are me personal favorite.

Yes it is important to keep a car waxed, the clear coat need protection. If the car is parked in the shade out of the sun it will require less waxing. The best thing I have found that works with ease and can be used on plastic and rubber is Honda motorcycle cleaner and polish. The more you buff the more it shines. Cost about $10.00 at Honda cycle dealer. One can will do a car 3 times. .

I don't think so. My '02 car is as shiny as it was new, and it has never seen the inside of a garage, and sits out in the So. California sun every day without wax.

It DOES get a little protection from whatever stuff they put into the local carwash rinse water. I notice it beads up real well on the rinse cycle.
