Audition for anything and everything that comes your way, no matter how small the singing job. Every bit of experience you gain as a professional singer will help you on your way. Many music stores, libraries, etc. have a bulletin board where bands post "singers wanted" ads. Or you could go on Craig's list to see if there are any bands needing singers in your area.

Most importantly, don't expect to become famous overnight. you'll have to have a lot of semi-crappy gigs before you get discovered. But keep at it!

Get some singing lessons because even the most professional singers need some training and then try to do some local theatre in your area, amateur dramatics, musical theatre, anything that will get you noticed. Also, audition, audition, audition. If you need a day job to support yourself then work in the evenings or weekends or around your schedule to make money to get to auditions etc.

If you truly want it then learn to take rejection but don't give up.
