As far as I know there were only 4 of them. The first one is the best one and the scariest

At this time, yes, there are only four films in the series; however, director Don Coscarelli is looking for closure to the present series, in preparation of not only remaking the original 'Phantasm', but also reimagining the whole film series (which might find incarnation via a T.V. series).

As of this week, Anchor Bay Entertainment has re-released the original film, with a great, brand new documentary atttached; they have also premiered on DVD, the third chapter, 'Phantasm III: Lord of the Dead', which I understand contains the extended director's cut, which was available on 'bootleg' for years, and was not included on the direct-to-video VHS release.

MGM still holds the rights to 'Phantasm IV: Oblivion', and has made this macabre chapter available the DVD release for several years now; the only hold-out, pending DVD release, is of course, 'Phantasm II', and that one is still collecting dust on the shelves over at Universal Home Video, who owns the rights (they were the distrubuters of the theatrical release, as well as the VHS home video release).

As of right now, there are 4. Sci-fi Network has the rights now and is supposed to be making a 5 & 6, but who knows.
Tomorrow, on April 10, 2007, 'Phantasm III' will be released on DVD in the United States!!!!!!! Yay!

I always thought it was about the cold.. not the smell. Since his planet/dimension was so hot and the people had to be compressed to stand it.. must be a ton of pressure.
