Scientific notation places the decimal point directly after the first non-zero numeral which is multiplied by 10 to some power. The exponent tells how many places the decimal point must be moved from its new position to change it back into the original number.
For instance, 4100 would be 4.100 * 10^3 because I would move the decimal point from its new location three places to the right to make the actual number.
0.0041 would be 4.1*10^-3 because I would move the decimal point from its new location three places to the left to make the actual number.
So 41 million is actually written 41,000,000 which is 4.1*10^7

it is also very important when doing scientific notation that the first number is between one and ten, for example
1.25 X 10 to the 5 is correct scientific notation
.125 X 10 to the 6
12.5 X 10 to the 4 are incorrect b/c the first number isn't between one and ten

41,000,000 is 41x10^6 or 41 times 10 to the sixth power
or 4.1 times 10 to the seventh power, he he : )
or .41 times 10 to the eighth power, count the decimal places
as stated for correct scientific notation it would have to be 4.1 times 10 to the seventh power, you really don't use too much in calculus though or math theory can become lax, use a lot in chem and physics, of course in physics may use calculus
it is for convenience and clarity, but no matter how you write it the number is the same : )

41,000,000 = 4.1 * 10^7
The decimal point starts after the last 0, right? So count how many places you move the decimal until there is only ONE number in front of it.
4.1000000 --> 4.1
You moved the decimal 7 places.
4.1 * 10^7

Well 41 million is also 41,000,000 or 4.1X10^7.
1 is 1X10^0
10 is 1X10^1
100 is 1X10^2
1,000 is 1X10^3
5300 is 5.3X10^3
and so on.

41,000,000 = 4.1 * 10^7
Basically, you take the necessary number of significant digits and add the exponent after that.
