I want to microwave the ground in my backyard - to kill small bugs.

I don't think it has much penetration power. Among Electromagnetic waves, only Infrared can penetrate ground up to a depth of about 6 ft.
Why do you want to kill bugs living below ground ? Not only they are doing you good by making your soil fertile, but they also have as much right to live as you have.

The microwave won't work with the door open and none escape when it's closed.
