I've had several of my little sister's friends seriously ask her if I was mentally retarded. Another one asked if I was autistic about two weeks ago. I'm not sure why they think this by watching the way I behave because I'm definitely not autistic or retarded. When I first heard it, I felt very self-conscious but now I've gotten used to the idea that periodically, people who don't know me will think that I have mental problems by watching me do whatever. It doesn't usually bother me. I usually just laugh anymore. I guess if I really value the person's opinion, it is painful to hear that. If not, it just goes in one ear and out the other.

Just the other day my preschooler came home and said that another little boy had called him retarded. He was upset. I was upset. I talked to him and explained how it was wrong to call other people names and I got over it because they are 4 years old.
However - I am assuming that this is an "adult" calling someone retarded. I would be upset but get over it because this person obviously is not very mature or smart, etc. if they cannot express themselves any better than a 4 year old.

For the most part the only time I would hear that was in a joking situation.

My girlfriend has a family member who was born mentally retarded (with an IQ below 70). I let the word "retarded" slip once in a while and am greeted with a slap on the arm or something of the nature.
She sees it as insensitive and offensive for me to make light of something like that.

I'd just laugh because I know I am far from retarded, and I have the IQ and GPA to prove it.

The words hurt more if you're insecure in yourself. Build up your self-confidence (not arrogance!), and accept the insult for what it is--another insecure person tossing out word bombs to divert attention and cover up for his or her own shortcomings.
