You can discuss this with your babies peditrician after birth but it is usually done before you leave the hospital.
For the person that posted this statement:
"For those of you that say it is not painful, how on earth would you know!? That is the first or second most sensitive area of a boy's body. OF COURSE IT IS PAINFUL!! "
Sorry but NO IT IS NOT PAINFUL. I work as a surgical tech in the OR and assist in three to five of these per day. I hardly ever see baby cry due to the procedure itself. Most of them that do cry do it when they are taken out of their nice warm blanket and sprawled out onto the circ table. It's a matter of being taken out of a nice, safe, warm envrionment not being in pain. If it is so painful then why is it most of them just lay there looking around??? Anesthetic is used upon the request of the mother but other than that it is not used because it is not needed. It sounds like many of you people need a quick course in A & P because if you knew anything about the anatomy of a babies penis you would know that the nerve endings have not formed in that are yet, therefore, they have no feeling there, unlike an adult would. Do your research before you go running mouth stating false information please.

It depends. Most people who do it for hygenic reasons have the OB-GYN do it right before the baby's discharged. Those that do it for religious reasons do it when the baby's a week old in a ceremony, often at home.
It's really an individual choice, and if you decide not to do it at birth, it can be done at any time, really. (Even if you let him decide when he's 18! It won't be any kind of fun then, less so than if he was an infant, but not medically harmful.)

I won't say the question was controversial...the answers are the controversial ones!!! My baby wasn't´t circumcised because he was born premature and now I don´t want to circumcise him, but the pediatrician says he has stretch prepuce and needs to have the surgery...my baby is now 1 year old and the circumcision is going to be made as a surgery in operation room with general anesthesia.

My son was 2 days old. He had it done the day we left the hospital. Tip: Get the neosporin with a pointy dispensing tip so you can apply it like whipped cream to a sundae. Nurses said you don't need that much but unless we gobbed it on it would get stuck a little to the diaper - ouch. So apply liberally! It was fine after 1 week. Also - in the U.S. you have the right to demand that anesthesia be used - I did. They put a numbing cream on the pee pee for an hour before and my son didn't even cry.

Usually it is done in the hospital, unless you are Jewish then you have a ceremony at home (usually)
Sometimes they don't do it in the hospital, like if your baby is small or something. Some doctors will do it in their office.
Some hospitals really don't want you to do it at all so they charge a lot to do it.
When I had my first it cost us about $100, when I had my second (9 years later) it was $500. This is not covered by OHIP if you live in ON. IT also may not be covered by any private insurance you may have.

People of the Jewish faith schedule the circumcision at a certain age, but it is still during infancy. It is a ceremony called a Bris and the actual circumcision is performed by a Moil (Rabbi). I'm not Jewish, but a friend of mine is...
As far as I know, other people who choose to circumcise their baby boys have it done before they leave the hospital. My twins were done the day before we left the hospital.

Your doc's office will ask you, and they'll ask you again once you're in labor and admitted to the hospital.
If you elect to do it at the hospital, it's usually the day after the baby is born.
Most docs will recommend that if you're going to have it done you have it done in those first few days, while baby's system is adjusting and he isn't all that aware of pain. If you do it later (like in a month or more) it's much more painful for the baby. By then he knows he hurts, and you'll have to deal with a lot of crying and discomfort.

Usually done right away at the hospital. But it is a good question to ask your doctor before having the baby. I assumed they automatically would do it right away if asked at the hospital. My doctor checked my son, and said oh no he's fine he doesn't need it, then left. My husband came in and said no we want it done, the doctor already had left and I was told to make an appt at his office. Then he told me it would be 6 months before he could do it with anathesia, never had it performed.

ok congrats on your first baby. if you are seeing a ob/gyn, just ask him if he will perform it or if you need to schedule it with a family dr. or pediatrician. while you are in there, the nurses will ask who your pediatrician is and he will come in and check the baby during your stay. so just check with the pediatrician to make sure you dont need to schedule an appointment. and ps - this is only a controversial topic to people who are against it.
