when people feel they are close to you they like to give you a nick name or a pet name . . I would assume because they are calling you by a nick name they feel comfortable with you and mean no disrespect . . if calling you Gul makes you feel other wise then you should explain to them how you feel and ask them to call you Gulab.

i dont know if your are indian/pakistani. but gulab im my language means rose, so you have a nice name. try to make people call you gulab.
