Well I'm not going to pick an artist that most people already know about like most of the other answers here. I'll give you 3 that are far less known than they probably should be.

1. Mother Love Bone -

By far the greatest of all the Seattle scene bands. The crazy and brilliant creativity of this band makes Nirvana look like boring chumps(At least in my opinion). They were the ONE Seattle band that the music industry people thought would conquer the ears of the world. One of the largest music industry bidding wars ever, took place over this band. However there singer, lyric writer and main figure Andrew Wood(a larger than life personality also known to his huge Seattle fan following as L'Andrew The Love Child ) died of an overdose about a month before their first full album was released. There chance to conquer the ears of the world never panned out obviously. They do have a very strong fan base and some of you may know them well. Almost all the people that I know who have heard their album 'Apple' or the compilation album(Which is basically Apple with a few more songs on it) are totally crazy about this band who has only given us such a small amount of music. The late Andrew Wood was undoubtedly one of the most charismatic and creative frontmen to EVER grace a rock stage, however the world didn't get much of a chance to see his brilliance. 2 members of Mother Love Bone, Guitarist Gossard and Bassist Ament, went on to form a band pretty much everyone knows, Pearl Jam. The band and album Temple Of The Dog(Which featured the huge early 90's hit 'Hunger Strike') were a tribute to the late Andrew Wood. I consider Mother Love Bone's Apple and the compilation album(The better buy) to be easily one of the most creatively written albums ever, style and lyric wise. Wood is also easily one of the greatest and most naturally gifted vocal arangers ever. And all this about a guy who died in his early 20's.

2. Bad Brains -

In my opinion the greatest american hardcore punk band ever! These guys are awesome. Find their self titled debut(An album that Beastie Boys Adam Yauch calls the greatest hardcore album ever) or their live album Banned in D.C. for starters. Bad Brains originate from the 80's D.C. punk scene, but are of Jamacian heritage and spirituality. Some of the craziest music crowds the world has ever known have been a part of their 80's shows. These Rastafarians also have a number of reggae songs spread throughout there album catalogue. They have no rules. Very raw, and very powerful, both musically and spiritually.

3. Misfits -

If you have a sense of humor and like gritty raw music. This band deserves your ear. I suppose they have become fairly well known(Thanks mostly to Metallica's 80's cover of of the Misfits song, Last Caress, and some solo fame from former vocalist and professed Satanist, Glen Danzig. Guns N' Roses also did a cover of there song Attitude.). The Misfits are considered the originators of horror punk. Whatever that is, but for me some of this bands songs really do work to create something somewhat different and cool. Songs like Last Caress, Attitude, She, Saturday Night, Some Kind Of Hate, and Dig Up Her Bones among others are more than worth your time.

I will also mention ~The Clash~ because they are my favorite band, but they are very well known throughout the world. They are less known in the U.S. than in many other countries, but have had a few big U.S. hits and have garnered much praise including Rolling Stone naming a Clash song as one of the ten best of the 80's. The Clash were formed by the late great Joe Srummer in 1977 and he decided on there style and approach after seeing one of the first ever Sex Pistols gigs. He said that he wanted to create one of the most intense and energetic sounding live bands because he was scarred as hell of ever being blown off the stage by some opening act with the fury of the Pistols. Only a few months later, The Clash were the Pistols opening act and the two bands along with The Ramones, were considered the 3 bands who were primarily responsible for why 1977 is often called in music circles as 'the year that punk broke'. The Clash went on to become by far the worlds highest selling punk band and have achieved #1 hits in more countries than most hard rock bands have even ever been able to brake into. The Clash are widley considered one of the greatest live acts ever by hoards of fans, critics and media who had a chance to see them. The Clash album From Here To Eternity is without doubt one of the best live albums I've ever heard. Their self titled debut and London Calling are widely considered their 2 best studio albums.

Any hard rock bands form the 80's. Jon Bon Jovi, GNR, White Snake, White Lion, Cinderella, And Skid Row. Those are just some off the top of my head.
There will never be anything like the 80's ever again. It was the best decade, I think!!!

Led Zeppelin. Robert Plant is an incredible vocalist. Jimmy Page is one of the best guitarists ever. The whole band is amazing, and every one of their songs are great.

MxPx........everyone is so judgmental about them there not punk enough or they're to christian or they're not christian enough blah blah...if everyone would give them a chance they'd find a group of guys who are dedicated to music and their fans and go out of their way to acknowledge them. Not to mention their music and lyrics are awesome :)
