(For grammar losers: I KNOW you aren't supposed to put titles in quotation marks, but I'm doing it anyway, because I can't find an underlining thing on here.)

Well, "Twilight" and "New Moon" by Stephenie Meyer were okay (about a girl who moves to live in with her divorced dad and becomes attracted to a vampire). Not the best books in the world, but they're enjoyable. There's also the Gossip Girl series by Cecily von Ziegesar (describes typical rich teens' lives in Upper East Side of NYC and a few other normal kids), which are PG 13 so if you or your parents aren't into that stuff, then don't read.

There's "Things You Either Hate or Love" by Brigid Lowry (about a self-described fat Australian girl trying to make money to buy a concert ticket). I liked it, but there's no hardcore plot or whatever, just a good solid description of a girl's life. "The Nanny Diaries" are for older people, but I read it anyway and it was OK. There is "Bridget Jones's Diary" by Helen Fielding, the ultimate chick lit book. And there is also "Angus, Thongs, and Full Frontal Snogging" (a part of the Georgia Nicolson Confessions series), a very humorous book about a British schoolgirl. I personally don't like the rest of the series, and thought "Angus" was the only good one.

Sarah Dessen writes a lot of chick lit books with the teenage girl in mind as the audience. They pretty much have the same plot (either something depressing happens and the protagonist, always a girl, has to get over it; OR the girl goes through a really hard/depressing time of her life, etc.) but if you don't have anything else to read, her books will at least keep you company.

I recommend "Looking for Alaska" by John Green. The protagonist, Miles, voluntarily goes to boarding school in search of the "Great Perhaps," meaning an adventure different from his everyday boring life. There he meets a few friends, including The Colonel (a nickname for this one guy) and Alaska, a messed-up and reckless girl. Miles (inevitably) falls in love with Alaska's unpredictability, but then later a tragedy happens that affects them all.

Lastly ... "The Year of Secret Assignments" by Jaclyn Moriarty is my personal favorite! It's told in diary entries, letters, etc., and it's REALLY cute and funny (about 3 BFF girls forced to do a pen-pal program in an all-girls school and exchanging letters with 3 guys from an all-boys school. 2 of the girls finds out that the other girl's feelings has been badly hurt by her pen pal and sets out to fix it all. Includes a crime thing, but it doesn't go into boring details).

Good luck with your search... if you didn't find anything that you liked, just go to Borders or Barnes and Noble and spend an hour at the Young Adult section. You'll find something. Hope I helped!

Non fantasy and sci-fi teen books:

Angus, Thongs and Full Frontal Snogging by Louise Rennison. Very humorous diary-type book about a British teen, her family, her school and her friends.

Reality Chick by Lauren Barnholdt. Interesting story of a college freshman who wins a spot on a reality television show being shot on campus and how it affects her life.

Boy Meets Boy from David Levithan is the story of a gay boy living in an idealistic community. It was a sweet, rather short, story.

Saint Iggy by K.L. Going is the story of a down on his luck boy whose parents are drug addicts. He's not very intelligent but when he gets kicked out of high school because of a misinterpretation of his actions by his teacher, he develops a plan to do something so good for society that they will have to let him back in to school.

The book I've just read isn't exactly a teen book, although it is the story of a girl growing up. Her parents are drifters and I think it takes place in the late 60s or early 70s. As a teenager the girl finds herself in some very adult situations, but nothing that was overly graphic. It is a non-fiction memoir called The Glass Castle by Jeannette Walls. I don't usually enjoy non-fiction, but I found the book very interesting.

Hope this helps!

If you want a teen romance book, any Sarah Dessen novel would be good. Specifically: Just Listen, The Truth About Forever and This Lullaby.

Does it have to be a series?
I liked Joan Lowery Nixon's books and Lois Lowry. Then there's The True Confessions of Charlotte Doyle. That's a good one too. I also know of some Christian teen books but I don't know if you're into that or not.
PS
I'm a Lauren Elizabeth too!
