Absolutely! I agree with you 100%! I think prisons should be like Alcatraz, with harsh conditions. With the way it is today, prison's sound like a resort! We're paying to keep criminals in a place where they get everything for free, while WE have to work our butts off to get the same thing! Ridiculous if you ask me. We treat our criminals better than we do ourselves. Our society's morals and values are really f***** up, aren't they?

What prison have you been visiting? I'd like to arrange for a cherished friend to be transferred there! The top notch medical/dental care I'm always hearing about would be nice!He had a small cavity in one tooth and the answer was to pull the tooth, he needs to see a doctor to renew a prescription for a chronic condition (no, it's not a drug with any recreational potential, it's Prilosec) but can't see the doc because he is not bleeding, and when he does get that script renewed, he'll be paying for it or rather either his mom or I will be doing so.
This is a routine we go through every 6 months or so...The situation has gotten so bad with prison health care in California that a federal judge recently ordered the whole department into recievership.
He shares a 6 x 12 cell with one other man, and counts himself lucky that there are not 3 or 4 in that cell due to the amazingly overcrowded state of the facility, he gets to leave that cell about 4 hours a day, including shower, chow, dayroom and yard time... and THAT is when the facility is not on lockdown due to drastic understaffing, ...on lockdown, it really is in the cell, 24/7, food passed through the door, etc the only thing that keeps going is the mail (and by the way, I send him paper, envelopes and postage, unless it is a letter to one's attorney of record AND there is no money on one's books, the prison does not pay for letters)....the educational programs, IF an inmate qualifies AND if there is a slot available in the class.....and surely you see the need to try to educate these people to improve the chances of their becoming productive citizens upon release?
The showers are hot and reasonably clean, but inmates buy their own soap, shampoo, toothpaste, etc.
The food is a joke, and is barely legal in quantity and quality... most inmates get VERY creative with the top ramen that is available at the commisary...
Visits are either in a big room with all the others having visits, sort of like a really bland cafeteria (this type of visit can last between 2 and 6 hours, depending on how many people are visiting that day) or else in a little booth where you talk on telephones with a thick sheet of glass between you (the phone visits last one hour). Family visits (sometimes called 'conjugal visits' ) are only available in a few states and are very difficult to qualify for, so 98% of all inmates won't be having any "intimate contact" during their sentence.
As to other recreational activities I keep hearing about, if there are video games, it has not been mentioned to me... Television in the day room where what to watch is decided by vote...any TVs or radios in the cells were not provided by the state, either the inmate or someone like me purchased them and like quarterly packages and phone calls (collect and incredibly costly- I pay 20 bucks for 15 minutes) they are a privilige that is EARNED... Surely you can see the value of rewarding good behavior?

Because prison work programs are an extremely cheap source of labor. Look into how many businesses have gone under because they can't compete with prison labor programs. In Michigan several companies doing laundry for hospitals lost contracts because they couldn't do the job any cheaper than these programs. Haven't you ever wondered why, for a so called "Free Society", we have more people in prison per capita than any other country on the planet? Is this the hallmark of a free society? A lot of people want to site murderers, rapists, and robbers as good excuses for prisons, but there are more and more people in prison everyday for non-violent crimes and even victim-less crimes. Perhaps, soon enough, even blogging will land people in prison.

We have 12-20 million illegal immigrant criminals running free who also get free, or subsidized, food, shelter, education, medical care and even sanctuary from law enforcement, etc. at our expense. Why should we pay for them? Maybe if we surrounded our cities and neighborhoods with barbed wire and refused to allow anyone in or out without proper identification and documentation, we could call ourselves prison towns whose prisoners leave on parole or on work programs and then we could get federal, state and local tax dollars for prisons and law enforcement? We could say we're under protective custody/guard just like the government has done to our border patrol agents who are now in prison for enforcing our laws.

Oh yeah, I'm sure it's a big party in there. Are you naive? Why dont' you find out what REALLY goes on in prison before you make ridiculous assumptions like the one you just made. Be grateful that you aren't in prison and be quiet...I guess in your case it's OK to spend billions on a stupid, meaningless war but begrudge prisoners the basics while they pay their debt to society. Why dont' you grow up?

What else would you rather do to the criminals and psychopaths who should be separated from society or punished? We can't send them off to their own island (which also costs some money). We can't just kill them, as much as some people would like to.
Prisons seem to be a necessary evil, until we can think of a better idea. And overhaul our criminal justice system.

would you rather rapists and killers running around? i don't....as for the free education and gym, sure it's not fair but life isn't fair. also, i wouldn't think that it's a free ride, from what i've heard, prison isn't that much fun, it's not supposed to be.

they really don't get free shelter, and they don't get any of that stuff for free. Their families have to pay, or they do, and plus I would go nuts having to stay somewhere like that everyday and every night.

Then why the heck don't you go to prison and join the free party. There's no better teacher than experience. So go for it!!!

Because they need to be locked up for what they did, and it's against everything that America stands for to just throw them in prison and let them die if they can't afford food.
