the Alert must be at ease but without distraction, and the well trained let them know that anybody entertaining you may be used by someone else to dispatch you over. The post may seem colorful, but the Guard knows who is in danger "at the stake" in there, even if the passers by forget what is behind them to target.I wouldn't myself spent much time around them than I would around a Gaza strip pass control.
If you are just aware of that,is not a Court Martial or an arrest of twenty days,or no leave pass to go and see your girlfriend,it is your Life that you are gambling to don't even have any of those, bad things, but alive.
You don't try to forget you speak English too,or even focus on concentrating in else as blocking your mind.
In the opposite they are aware, very aware -not so much of the details- but of the general picture around them. If he distracts his attention it may cost precisely the Life of the most cute child around him...
Become something more than funny and you may get a very bad reaction that can lead you to a fulminating arrest or shot on site.

Remember, you may be looking at him but he is watching beyond you,for England (all).

They have very rigid training. It's the same with most official guards. I saw the guards at Rideau Hall about to change, and a couple of tourists didn't realize what was about to happen. Then went up beside the guards to have their photos taken, and all of a sudden the cannons went off to fire the salute. The tourists scattered and the guards were right on the beat with no hesitation or distraction interfering with their "marching orders".

Similar to how the Marines holding the flags in color guard during the President's speeches discipline themselves from laughing at the him here in America. They don't pay attention. They just stand there not listening and will only become alert if they hear either "HELP! HELP!'' or gunfire.

Unless they see a weapon or hear it being used. Or hear some other kind of emergency occurring, they don't pay enough attention and ignore all the ridiculousness.

By remembering that if they do any such thing they will be court martialled. That should wipe the smile off anyone's face!
My younger son is the only person I know who has elicited a word out of a guard on duty. He was small and cute at the time. He kept smiling at a guard outside Windsor Castle and saying "Hello, soldier!" As we left, the guard muttered "Hello!" out of the corner of his mouth.

I cannot imagine how they manage to endure the tourists. It says a lot for their discipline! I wonder if they have special training for sentry duty?

One they have discipline and two they just desensitize them selves to it. How I guess you would have to ask them I know for my guard duty etc and when I have worked protection details etc I have got my "game face" by just never showing any emotions what so ever it helps. ...Shadow Stalker

I suppose they get used to it after standing there day after day & hearing the same comments & being asked the same questions. Every job gets boring after a while.
