I say swim first and lift next. Since swimming is an aerobic sport it will literally get you pumped up for lifting. Do a general workout in the pool if you're not on the swim team or anything and then once you're done or when you're instructed to you should get out and then lift.

If you did it switched around you'd lift and then swim which would be bad for you in more than one way. To start with you wouldn't be warmed up for lifting and your max would go down on days you lifted first. Second, if you were on 80% or higher, you'd be dead and have no energy left for swimming. You'd basically be exhausted and you also wouldn't feel quite that motivated to go swimming afterwards. Lastly, your times would go down in swimming if you did keep track of them from not being as energized. From the lifting the muscles that you use to kick and pull the water would be exhausted.

But I must recommend that you eat something before you go to the next thing if you do end up doing both in one day. Going straight from one exercise to another is not an easy thing, I've done it before and sometimes I came out 2 pounds lighter from not eating (self-explanatory). You really need to eat something between the workouts otherwise you're really going to be hurting.

I recommend swimming first then lifting. If you swim first you will be warmed up for lifting. Also, lifting puts more stress on your muscles and after you lift you should rest, not engage those muscles in further activity (the exception to this is circuit training which is very incremental).

However since swimming is low impact it will not hurt you after you lift but if you are swimming hard I recommend doing it before you lift. Your body is much less likely to cramp up.

Good luck either way!
