There is virtually no evidence to suggest that the Aztecs traded in California, and if there is any archaeological evidence, it is very second or third hand ... someone traded with someone else who traded with someone else who traded with California. There were NO direct trade routes, not any, at all.

However,t his is a VERY politically charged debate because in the ideas of ATZLAN, California should be given back to Mexico because it is traditionally part of the Aztec empire. There is, however, two problems with this argument. First, the Aztecs never traded, let's say with the Chumash, one of the largest Southern California tribes/nations. Secondly, Mexico only controlled California for 27 years! That's it, that's the total story, from 1821, Mexican Independence, to 1848, the Bear Flag Revolt.

What is still amazing to me is that some extreme advocates of Atzlan, still think that California should be given back to Mexico. It isn't going to happen.

I believe there is evidence from California that the Aztecs traded at least that far north.
