she wears sweatpants alot lots of sweaterswears hair in ponytails and has a mexican tone

I think I would first take a look at her body type, coloring, etc. to see which styles and colors will and won't work for her. Then, I'd maybe learn a little bit about her personality, likes and dislikes, etc. For example, if she's into music or likes to sing or something, I'd maybe give her a more glam, rock-n-roll look. But if she's sort of shy and quiet, I'd maybe pick out clothes that were more sweet and understated. Also, the girl has to be willing to try out any clothes you put her in, so you may want to sit down with her and flip through some magazines like YM, Cosmo, Glamour, etc. to see what kind of look she'd be willing to try out.

You should go to websites like style.com and just start reading. You can also watch "What Not To Wear" on TLC as the other answerer prescribed.
Lastly, just copy someone who you know has style. Shop at stores like Wet Seal, Forever 21, Aeropostale, Gap, Urban Outfitters, etc.

You have to take her likes/dislikes into consideration. You want the client to feel comfortable in the clothing. Skin color, eye color and physique plays a major role in deciding what complements the body type. You can't just put clothes on a blank canvas!
