How did the democrat party originally elect, and continue for decades to elect a man who worked at the highest levels of the KKK? Was it after they elected Robert "KKK" Byrd that they decide that they considered blacks human beings, and was they why he at least ceremonially left the KKK?

Perhaps Nomo, map, W Hill, and captain collector can add to their answers an explanation of Robert KKK Byrd's awful racial slurs as recently as 2001:

Nancy Pelosi quipped that Byrd "can apologize all he wants, it doesn't remove the sentiment that escaped his mouth that day."

He quit the KKK 60 years ago, and was a Democrat at a time when the Democratic Party was loaded with southern segregationists. Most of these supporters of Jim Crow switched from the Democratic to the Republican Party after the Civil Rights Act was signed into law by a Democrat in 1964.

Because Democratic Party is a party of reacism. They discriminated before 60s. Right now, they just change the subjects of the victims of their racism.

Republicans made former Dem. drop their race nonsense when they change their political affiliation.

It is a sad commentary that democrats will elect anyone who brings home the bacon. No one does like Byrd.

Byrd did not work at the highest levels of the KKK, as a young southern man in the 30's he, for a short period, was a member as were many others in hid position, he QUICKLY renounced the klan and worked against them, so what part of growth and change don't you understand, oh right probably a lot of it since it seems you're not capable of it your self

you are missing the fact repubs vote for Byrd too,for doing his job. many political careers were launched through the klan. You may want to look into west virginia history too, specifically how and why they became a state

Well the important issue is Why didn't you move to West Virginia and Vote for a Redpublican.

As an American concerned with the welfare of West Virginia you are a failure. Your responsibility to your fellow Americans has not been fulfilled. You let personal weakness and fear over power your desire to help West Virginia..

Go Team Red Go

He hasn't been a member of the Klan since the 1940's. Haven't you done anything stupid when you were young? Conservatives love tout their Christianity as a sign of their moral superiority (even though most Dem's are Christians). If Christianity is about forgiveness then why don't cons practice what they preach?

Sir, You are a Great Amwircan. But the Press, run Trent Lott out, for far less. We need our voices heard, in the Voting Both. That's where the power comes from.
