--Usually a trail bike has a headlight for riding through heavily shaded trails and night riding.
--Trial bikes also have a skid plate (metal guard under the engine cases to prevent rocks and tree stumps from smashing through the engine).
--Some models will come with a speedometer and mileage trip meter. That is usefull for timed enduro racing. Where you have a specific time to get to the next check point. Usualy the course is layed out so you should ride at a constant speed of 26mph to get to the check point, which is maped out by the race coordinators.. A clock watch is used by the rider and a lot of calculations are done on the fly.
--Trail bikes are just a little de-tuned and geared for more low end torque. As an MX bike is geared for high RPMs

The CRF has a 4 stroke engine
The CR has a 2 stroke engine
And they are both competition moto-cross bikes.

The above answer is correct but I just wanted to add a couple things. Not all CRF's are motocross bikes. The CRF line breaks down into 3 different categories. The CRF50, 70, 100, 150 and 230 are air cooled, steel framed trail (play) bikes. They are intended for trail riding but nothing too serious. The CRF250X can also be considered a trail bike of sorts but is intended for more extreme trail riding or woods racing. It has a titanium valved, water cooled engine, aluminum perimeter frame and long travel race suspension. It does have a wider ratio transmission than the MX model, a headlight, brake light and electric start. The CRF250R a motocross bike. So the Honda dirt bike line goes something like this. CRF50F, CRF70F, CRF100F, CRF150F and CRF230F are all low performance trail/play bikes. CRF250X and CRF450X are high performance trail/woods race bikes. CRF150R, CRF250R and CRF450R are all MX bikes. All CRFs are 4 stroke. All CR's are 2 stroke and all CR's are MX bikes. You should be thoroughly confused by now.

Both bikes are good for off road riding.
I am 48 and ride an old Honda XR-250 that I bought for $1500. It runs fine. I am not racing anymore and enjoy the soft cushy ride. I am not dead yet,and can only kick beginners ***, but it fun to watch them eat dirt once they are stuffed in a corner while trail ridding.
