What is that round thing, magnet I think, attached to a mini USB to USB cable.?

I have several of these laying in boxes from various SONY products, and wanted to know if I could use them for other peripheral devices that call for such connection.

The round thing is a ferrite inductor that acts as a filter against RFI. SONY is VERY fond of proprietary designs. I doubt if you could use those in non SONY products.

They are coils, used to help filter out RFI Radio Frequency Interference
