Write an inequality that represents the statement:
x is less than 4 and greater than 1.

I put X < 4 + X > 1 and apparently that's not it.

You had the right idea. In this particular case the "and" does not translate to addition. Instead think of it as a seperate statement and then put the two statements together.

x is less then 4
x<4

x is greater than 1
x>1

therefore; x<4, x>1 or 1

You're right - that's not it. x < 4 + x > 1 means that:

(a) x < 4 + x which means that 0 < 4
(b) 4 + x > 1 which means x > -3

Let's go step by step. First, x is less than 4.
In mathematical form, this means:

x < 4

Similarly, for x greater than 1:

x > 1

Combine these two:

x < 4 AND x > 1
4 > x AND x > 1
4 > x > 1

This is the answer you are looking for.
