When a batter steps into the batters box for the first time of the season, what is their batting average. I am pretty sure it is .000, but I have a friend that swears when you bat for the first time your average is 1000. Then I was also told by them because you start at 1000 if you are 0-1 your average is .500. I was like no if you are 1-2 or 2-4 your average would then be .500. If you could please get back to me with the correct answer please do. Thanks

Mathematically, your batting average before you have an at-bat is undefined. Batting average is hits divided by at-bats. If AB = 0 then you're dividing by zero, which is not possible. Thus, your average is undefined, or non-existent.

The first time you step into the batters box you do not have an average. You are not even 0 for 0, because that indicates you have been through an at bat but you walked, HBP etc. Your BA when you enter the batters box for the first time is N/A.

Besides, any number divided by 0 is undefined.

its .000 Once you have had an at bat, you have something to average. You can only have 1.000 if you have a hit for every at bat you have. As far as 0 for 1 being .500 You should have walked away from your friend as soon as it came out their mouth. You may now be dumber after hearing them speak.

You have the right answer.
Your friend is probably smoking crack or something. Just kidding.

But you're right, if you've batted 0-1 there's no mathematical way you could be .500, it just doesn't work that way. You are most defiantly .000 because you are currently hit less.
If you struck out a thousand times you wouldn't be sitting at .001, you would be at .000, and if you got 500 hits out of a thousand, you would be at .500.

Tell your friend that he needs to stop talking about things that he knows nothing about.
And tell him he needs to go back to school! lol cheers

.000 is the answer. 1.000 means you have had a hit for each at bat. If you've had no at bat, it's .000.
