I would have to say Allman Brothers Band. They had everything that a great band should have. A sound that could be labeled Blues, Classic Rock, Southern Rock, and soul. Almost anybody can relate or at least remember an Allman Brothers track. Whether it be Whipping Post, Stormy Monday Blues (their version at least), Ramblin Man, Statesboro Blues, or Melissa, they had a sound for everyone. On top of that, Duane Allman (R.I.P) is still considered one of the greatest guitarists of all time. He played with more bands and created more hits with more artists than most artists twice his age. Before his untimely death at only 25, he had already worked and cut great music with Eric Clapton ("Layla" by Derek and the Dominos) , Boz Scaggs ("Loan me a Dime"), Wilson Pickett, and Aretha Franklin, plus many, many more. EVen today the Allman Brothers are still touring and still putting out a great sound so check it out and see if you can help NOT tapping your foot or closing your eyes to take in the sound.

How can you be so close minded and then ask the question you did? It would be impossible to name one band or singer because the truly great artists have their own strengths and weaknesses. For example, Elvis had a strong voice and a powerful impact on music and society. His music has proven to be timeless. Queen had a flair and a theatrical aspect to their music that made them stand out. In our generation, Fall Out Boy has not only written powerful songs and created incredible music, but they inspire and move the kids that listen to them.
