It will only soften after many washes and a lot of wear.
Wash it whenever you are doing a load of jeans. Wash them in warm water and use a full cap of fabric softener. Dry in the dryer on the High or Cotton setting.

Really cheap hair conditioner works better than fabric softener. Use shampoo to wash your jacket and conditioner to rinse it. Suave or a cheap store brand works better than the expensive brands.

Try ommitting the softner, put it in a really hot wash with some household soda crystals and deterrgent. After wash it lower temperature this should soften it.
