i just set up my tank and right now i have the emperor 400....i got it to work after pouring alot of water....then i had to shut it off because of the waterfall noise (annoying) and when i turned it back on....i had to pour alot more water again.

i have decided to get something else. the emperor 400 is very loud.

i need something simple and QUIET! something that wont create a water fall because i have turtles and i dont (cant) have my water all the way up ( i know if i had the water all the way up close to the waterfall the noise would not be as loud).

the best one i can think of is the tetra whisper. anyone with good experiences with them? and what about aquaclear?

thank you for your time.

Both these filters will give you the waterfall effect; however they are much more quiet then the Emperor Filters.
I prefer the Whisper for better mechanical filtration (especially if you get the bio model with the sponge). The Aqua Clears have more bio capacity but also have a lot more flow by and in my aquarium maintenance experience have a higher breakdown rate.

Other considerations are the internal Filters such as the Via Aqua 305 PF (these are very reliable and are good bio filters). And another consideration is the often forgotten Sponge Filters of which there are models that go as high as a 1500 gallon pond. These can be powered by air or power head pumps. I recommend the Hydro Sponge here (for bio capacity and selection).

I recommend reading this article about filters to help you with your choices:

the canister with no media is nearly useless, why don't you have biomedia and a sponge in it..?? and yes, the whispers do not have good biologic filtration, but you should not buy the smallest aquaclear you need a much larger one, or an Emperor filter. note: the ratings on filters, is misleading. I use only the flow rate and amount of filter materials when judging filters. Your tank needs about 500 gallons per hour total flow from all your filters for most fish, and more if you keep cichlids or have a lot of decoration/rocks in the tank....

Think maintenance here. After all, you are the one who will need to clean the filter. If you have water falling, maybe put a pebble or two down where it falls so you get increased oxygen take-up but not the extra noise?

Aquaclear last forever BUT both of the filters that you mentioned are going to give you that WATERFALL effect.
If you went with a Canister filter, you can put the return hose down as far as you want to, that will eliminate the splashing.

I have a whisper and they are very quiet. You will still have the waterfall - but it will be very quiet besides that. I often have to check the filter to make sure it is still running it is that quiet. Hope this helps....

I have used both types of filters and found them to both be good filters, but personlly prefer the whispers. They seem a bit quiter and materials are more readily available in my area.
