Yesterday a perfect soccer-size ball made of silverish
metal fell into my backyard. The markings engraved
on its surface clearly indicate its extra terristrial origin.
I tried to drill it with tugsten carbide bore, but it failed
to make a scratch.

"government has the technology and expertise to study something like it much better then you could"

Frankly, I doubt it.

Well if I found something like that I'd turn it over to the government because either
1. It's some kind of military experiment and they'd like it back, wouldn't want something like that to fall into enemy hands.
2. It is an enemy weapon of some kind and should be given to the proper authorities. Wouldn't want to play around with something like that, who knows it could self-destruct in your hand.
3. If it is ET in origin, then it should still be given to the government because they have the technology and expertise to study something like it much better then you could.

What you might have found could be ordinary space debris- left from rockets or satellites. These usually land on the Earth in shape of a ball and have strange inscriptions on them due to mutiliation of our own English language labels and places where screws, nuts and bolts fused due to high heat. You may not be able to drill it due to the high tensility of metal used for making rockets and satellites- remember, they too have to withstand shocks from meteorites and other elements in outer space.

If you genuinely believe the object is from an alien civilization, suggest you take it to the nearest major TV station and show it around to the broad audience- which will help the mankind to know there's another civilization somewhere out there- that we are not alone in this universe. Next, you can take pictures of the object and hand it over to the nearest space research lab or government agency for research.

Who knows...it might be some sort of an alien missile timed to explode on Earth at a particular date and time.
