no...I think it's transference....they put themselves in place of the athletes.
I don't feel that way at all.

Well apparently I fall within that stereotype if it is. I've never really took any interest in watching sports. I tend to say I support the football (soccer) team my dad does, but I don't really even care. However in saying that, there was a competition thing on my deodorant I got during the World Cup last year and each can gave you a random country and I got Spain. The prize was £50 if the team you got won the cup. During this time I got really into the football because I was genuinely supporting them (in the hope I'd win the £50)... and they won. It made me realise though, the reason why I didn't watch sports is because I don't genuinely support anyone, hence it's very boring to watch. But because I was genuinely supporting Spain, I could watch the whole thing, and it was tense! haha. Now I don't watch any sports again, cause I have no reason to support anyone. :) As for playing sports, I don't play any in real life, mainly due to my shyness and my general suckishness at sports. I do however really enjoy them when I'm playing against people of my own skill level and am able to take an active part in it in PE. I've always really wanted to get into basketball if I didn't have this social anxiety. :(

I don't know if it's peer pressure so much as it's herd-mentality. Everyone does it, so you do it, too. But really, I think most guys genuinely enjoy watching and playing sports.
I enjoyed sports until late grade school. Then I just found them really boring.

I believe that men follow professional sports because it is something that you are brought up with.

My observations have been that men follow sports because they love sports. It's great to have a passion about something.

those who dont have a passion for the sports probably do out of wanting to be socially accepted. for women, i will use my own sceario to answer, i learned cycling from a bf. when i was introduced to the tours i was intruiged. it was a lifestyle for him, so it became one for me, and yes prob some of it to be socially accepted by him and the people around us. i still cycle til this day though. i've seen the gf's of cyclist enter races and totally hate it when they are done but dare not tell their bf's. i think alot of them do it out of peer pressure but some genuinely love it.

to a large degree. people are trained to do what rewards them, and avoid what pains them. so if the feeling they get when they watch sports is comradery, happiness, laughing, and in the end they feel as though they were actualy a part of the team that won, they feel great, even though they did nothing... probably the first good example of the virtual world.

I think some may. Why? Imagine this scenario...
Hey Phil, did you catch the game last night? Did you see that awesome play in the 2nd half?
No, man. I was watching HGTV with the wife. It was the kitchen gadget show!

No only some guys do. I can tell you I truly love the NHL playoffs! Oh Yeah!
But yea... our society DOES in fact consider guys who hate sports to be very uncool! Stupid society...
