and are there any serious side effects once you get on them?

It typically takes two weeks to a month for the pills to become effective. You should be advised by your doctor to use back up methods for the first month that you are on the pill. The serious side effects are rare in women who are under 35 and do not smoke but can include blood clots. There are many, many different types of pills so if you find you don't like one brand switch to one you do like. You should use back up methods (condoms and spermicide) whenever you switch brands as well.
Best of luck,
Jenn

There are no serious side effects once you get on birth control. I have been taking BC pills for about 7 years now. The doctors actually told me that they can help prevent several cancers when you are on them long term. In fact if you miss some pills during the month it is possible to get pregnant. Just remember that the pills don't protect against any STD's.

Doctors recommend that you go through one full month's supply before they are effective

For my husband and I they have worked wonderfully. We are still in college and want to wait until we both get finished to have kids.

Usually your doctor will tell you to at least use a second method of protection for the first month before you completely start to rely on your birthcontrol. As far as the side effects, it depends on the type of birth control that you are on and how your body is going to react to it. The side effects will also be listed in the instruction booklet that you get when you start birthcontrol.

It can take up to a month for all of the side effects to kick in. Some people don't experience very many at all, but I've found as they get stronger near the end of the month they get worse. I had a killer migraine two weeks ago when I was on the last active week before the inactive ones. And I take ortho-tri-cyclen lo which is supposed to have fewer side effects.

Read the disclosures that come with your pills, there are posisble side effects which are increased by smoking. Some people also say they make you gain weight which I am still undecided about. If you exercise & eat right you shoudl be fine. Mine started working like a month after I got started on them & I have had no serious problems with them, they actually help decrease the length & flow of your period & help with pimples too.

One month of taking them correctly. Read the literature that comes with the pills for side effects.

No more than 7 days.

Some doctors tell patients long just to cover themselves, to make sure you et use to taking them correctly. But at the end of the first week of active pills you are full yprotected from the pill just as you'll be in 6 months.
